whoa. 28 mph average for just under 3 hours or so (for the leaders, not me!). The race started hot from the gun, and i'm not sure if it ever slowed down for more than a couple minutes at a time. i was lookin to play with the big boys today, but it wasn't happening. too fast.
but about 10 miles before the kom climb, i saw a chance, so i attacked. next thing i know there's 3 of us with a gap. then all of a sudden 3 bissell guys and a few other pros bridged (very quickly). so there was a 9 pros, a U23 national kid, a cal-giant, and me. I was feeling good, pulling through every other time or so. Then we hit the climb... the first few miles was fine. Then my body went into shut down mode. heavy breathing, high HR, and slowwwing down. then i was dropped. then botero came flying by. then a couple slipstreams and levi came flyin by. then a lot of guys came flyin by. then more. then more. eventually i got on and i got in the main group on the flats with most of our guys there too. but off the front, still, was my break! crap. turns out they made it to the finish.
i'm pretty sure i could have hung on a normal day, but i just wasn't feelin it today, which sucked. but what can ya do. i stopped racing at about 10k to go because i was cramping and pretty much dying. but hopefully i'll be snappin back and making a better mark sometime in the next 4 days.
78 miles tomorrow. 45 downhill, then the next 33 are up. should be tough.
